MEASURES FOR MODERNIZATION OF CN-TYPE PUMPS

CN-type centrifugal pumps are general-purpose pumps.

All CN-type pumps can be grouped together based on several common design features: a semi-volute inlet, volute discharge, and transfer channel; a multi-stage design that allows high pump capacity to generate a high head for the pumped water.

The modernization and improvement of CN-type pump designs are aimed at increasing efficiency, energy performance, and reliability, while reducing energy consumption and material usage.

Key Areas of Improvement Include:

  • Optimization of the flow part
  • Increased erosion resistance of flow components
  • Enhancement of bearing and other structural units
  • Use of mechanical seal (end-face seal) technology
  • Reduction of noise and vibration levels
  • Extension of maintenance intervals
  • Increased overall service life of the pump

Special Reliability Requirements for CN-Type Pumps
The scope of application and operating conditions of the CN type pumps determined the basic requirements for their design:

  • Ensure high reliability and extended service life (mean time between major overhauls: at least 20,000–32,000 hours)
  • Ensure external tightness
  • Maintain a stable, continuously declining head characteristic over a flow range from 20% to 110% of nominal capacity to allow stable parallel operation within the main system

Extending the Operating Range of CN-Type Pumps:

Achieved by trimming the impeller diameter by no more than 10% of its original size, while ensuring that the efficiency drop does not exceed 3%

Additional Factors Directly Affecting Reliability and Energy Efficiency:

  • Correct selection of the CN-type pump according to required system parameters
  • Consideration of operational conditions and integration into the pumping system
  • Accuracy and quality of manufacturing
  • Professional installation and proper operation

Complying with these requirements can improve the reliability and efficiency of the equipment by 15–20%, which is a very high performance level and a critical factor for the overall operation of the pump unit.

The application and operating conditions of CN pumps determine the key design requirements:

  • High reliability and extended service life (average service life before major overhaul – at least 20,000-32,000 hours);
  • Ensuring external tightness;
  • A stable, continuously decreasing pressure characteristic in a flow rate range from 20% to 110% of the nominal flow rate to ensure reliable parallel operation in the main network.

Expanding the range of CN pumps is achieved by trimming the impeller outer diameter by no more than 10% of the original diameter, while the efficiency reduction should not exceed 3%.

Furthermore, the reliability and energy efficiency of CN pumps are directly affected by:

  • Correct selection of CN pumps according to the required network parameters;
  • Consideration of operational features and integration into the pumping equipment flow chart;
  • Precision and quality of manufacture;
  • Qualified installation and subsequent operation. Compliance with these requirements will improve the reliability and efficiency of the equipment by 15-20%, which is a very high indicator and a critical factor in the operation of the entire pumping unit.

Pumps of CN-type must reliably operate in automatic mode without constant presence of maintenance personnel and ensure reliable performance when connected to the main network.

The main requirements for the design of CN-type pumps:

  • High reliability and economy;
  • Extended range of use through impeller trimming;
  • Long service life;
  • Dynamic stability across the entire operating range;
  • Stable, continuously declining head characteristic to ensure stable operation when pumps are run in parallel;
  • Proper selection of materials for main components to provide the required service life under operating conditions;
  • Selection of the appropriate type of seal;
  • High degree of standardization;
  • Ease of assembly, disassembly, maintenance, and high repairability under operating conditions.

CN-type pumps and pump units based on them are designed for pumping water and liquids with properties similar to water in terms of viscosity and chemical activity, with temperatures up to 100 °C, containing solid inclusions not exceeding 0.05% by mass, with a maximum particle size of 0.2 mm, and microhardness not exceeding 6.5 MPa (650 kgf/mm²), in water supply systems of industrial and municipal facilities, in agriculture and land reclamation for irrigation and drainage, and other applications.

As a drive for CN-type pumps, asynchronous electric motors with a nominal rotational speed of 1000–1480 rpm are used.
Design and structural features of CN-type pumps and electric pump units based on them (ACN type)
Let us consider the structure of an ACN-type pump unit. It includes the following main components:

  • CN-type pump assembled with auxiliary pipelines within the pump. The pump parameters are selected in accordance with the required network parameters.
  • Drive. An asynchronous electric motor is used as the drive for CN-type pumps.
  • Frame. Common or separate, depending on the pump size. Supplied upon customer request in accordance with the contract.
  • Coupling. Pumps are equipped with an elastic pin-and-bush coupling of MUVP type.
  • Coupling guard.
  • Automation and instrumentation. Each pump unit is equipped with an automation and instrumentation system that ensures monitoring of key operating parameters, automatic control during start-up and shutdown modes, and automatic shutdown in case of unacceptable deviations of process parameters.

CN-type pumps are centrifugal, horizontally arranged, volute-type (with semi-volute inlet and volute outlets, with interstage transfer channels), with a horizontally split casing, two- or four-stage, with single-suction impellers installed symmetrically with their main discs facing each other.

In the lower part of the pump casing there are support feet, as well as suction and discharge nozzles directed in opposite directions, perpendicular to the pump axis. This arrangement of the nozzles and the horizontal casing split allow disassembly, assembly, and maintenance of the pump without disconnecting pipelines or removing the electric motor.

Axial force balancing is achieved by the symmetrical arrangement of the impellers. The rotor is supported by external rolling bearings. Bearing lubrication is grease (plastic type). Shaft sealing is mechanical with gland packing, with supply of cooling and sealing fluid.

  • application of a new high-efficiency hydraulic (flow) part with increased efficiency;
  • use of higher-grade materials and coatings for flow part components to improve erosion resistance;
  • use of rolling bearings manufactured by SKF, featuring high precision and low friction torque, enabling operation at high rotational speeds with low noise, wear, heat generation, and energy consumption;
  • application of mechanical seals;
  • use of an elastic disc coupling (between the motor and the pump) to improve vibration characteristics and increase the reliability of the pump unit.

The purpose of modernization is to improve the reliability, efficiency, and operational safety of the pump.
